Selonnes Policy Tidbits: |  FGN Disbanding SARS – a good move – but more work remains.

FGN disbanding of SARS is a good move.   Speaking truth to power takes different dimensions and ultimately, will yeid some concrete results. As we congratulate advocates of SARS reform, by any means,  some larger insecurity questions loom, more so since nature abhors, vacuum.   Announcement of SARS disbandment is in tandem with views we have continuously canvassed in the public fora. Synoptically, we remain of the view that   1) In the past several years, Nigeria has suffered a severe reverse in governance in every ramification…the country has regressed in various aspects of governance. 2) Nigerians are fast losing confidence in our statutory security arrangements. Thus, it seems the only option left to Nigerian citizens, is resort to collective regional, community or individual self-defense; and 3)that the  AGF to (should) inform police and security agency bosses that federal and state public prosecutors will not proceed with prosecution of cases where there are breaches of the Constitution and illegally obtained evidence and arrests and seizures.

More work needs to be done to curb the dimunition of ordered liberties, wanton police brutality, harassment, maiming and torture of Nigerians and extra-judicial killings by rogue elements with the security outfits. There must be an end to every form of police brutality in Nigeria. Meanwhile, we will continue our advocacy for the rule of law, due process and upholding constitutional dictates.
