Obaze pays tribute to late Mallam Gidado Idris

I join Nigerians in mourning the passing of the Mallam Gidado Idris, GCON, one of the last rare breed of Nigerian technocrats in the cadre of Super Permanent Secretaries. A soft spoken and genteel man, his self-effacing demeanor, belied his vast knowledge, connections, and grasp of the inner workings of Nigerian politics and government.

After holding several high-brow appointments in Northern Nigeria and Federal Governments, Gidado was appointed first Clerk of the National Assembly in 1979. Later on he served as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation under Gen. Sani Abacha.Mallam Idris, will best be remembered, as singularly shepherding in June 1978, the final drafting and vetting of Nigeria’s 1979 Constitution. A witty, gentle and unassuming soul, his wise counsel to those in political leadership will be sorely missed.
